The Scorch Trials is a 2010 young adult post-apocalyptic dystopian science fiction novel written by American author James Dashner and the second book, fourth chronologically, in The Maze Runner series. The novel was published on 18 September 2010 by Delacorte Press. It follows The Maze Runner and is followed by The Death Cure. A film adaptation was released on 18 September 2015 by 20th Century Fox.

The book starts with Thomas and the other teenagers known as “Gladers”, who had escaped from the Maze in the previous book, sleeping in the dormitory they were brought to by a group of rescuers. Thomas is woken by telepathic communication with Teresa, the only girl from the Glade, who is afraid. As he wakes up, he finds that the facility is being attacked by Cranks, aggressive zombie-like people that have been affected by a plague known as “the Flare.” Cranks aren’t crazy and zombie like when they first catch the flare.

When they aren’t past gone, when they aren’t trying to kill everyone, they can act normal. He and the others escape into the facility’s common area and discover that their rescuers are dead. They also find that Teresa is missing from her room, and in her place is a boy named Aris Jones. Aris explains that he escaped from a similar Maze experiment, dubbed “Group B,” in which he was the only male. The boys then discover tattoos on their necks assigning them specific roles.

The Scorch Trials by James Dashner Characters

Thomas:

The main protagonist of the series. A teenage boy who is a Runner in the Glade. He discovered he had a part in helping WICKED and building the Maze when he was stung by a Griever. He has the ability to speak telepathically with Aris and Teresa. The tattoo on the back of his neck given to him by WICKED researchers says, “To be killed by Group B”. Thomas struggles with many conflicts throughout the book, such as becoming the real leader, being betrayed by Teresa, and most importantly, surviving the Scorch. This causes him to become confused and hurt.

Teresa Agnes:

Cares for Thomas, as she was his close friend before the trials. She can speak telepathically with Thomas and Aris. She spends much of the novel with Group B, of which she becomes the leader. She gets under the control of WICKED at times, which makes it difficult for Thomas to trust her. She was to be known as “The Betrayer”.

Newt:

A boy with long, blonde hair, a slight limp, a muscular build, and a strange accent (which is presumed to be British). Newt is a kind and level-headed character, who takes care of the other surviving gladers. Newt is especially close with Thomas, but is also friends with Minho, Frypan, and the rest of the boys in their group. The tattoo on the back of his neck designates him as “The Glue” because he holds them all together.

Minho:

A teenage boy who was the Keeper of the Runners in the Glade. He is aggressive, stubborn, and sassy, which gets him in trouble frequently. He is friends with Newt, Thomas, and all the other Gladers. The tattoo on the back on his neck shows WICKED intended for him to be “The Leader”.

Frypan:

A boy who escaped the maze. He was the Glade’s cook and is always careful with food. He is described as dark-skinned and hairy with a beard though he is still a teenager.

Aris Jones:

Another boy who was involved with WICKED before the Maze. His role in his group was similar to that of Teresa’s. He can speak telepathically with Thomas and Teresa and his best friend, Rachel, who was killed when Group B escaped their Maze. The tattoo on his neck designates him as “The Partner”.

Jorge:

A man who presents himself as the leader of the Cranks. He appears to be dangerous and psychotic, yet also humorous. He is a father-figure towards Brenda. He helps the Gladers to get past the Scorch and expects a cure for himself and Brenda.

Brenda:

A very handsy girl from Canada, who claimed to be turning into a Crank. Both Jorge and Brenda help lead the Gladers through the Scorch. Brenda leads Thomas after they become separated from the rest of the group. Brenda flirts with Thomas continuously after Thomas shows he doesn’t like it.

Janson (Rat Man):

The first WICKED researcher to identify himself to the Gladers. He informs them that they are infected with the Flare and how to get its cure.

Ava Paige:

The chancellor of WICKED is responsible for arranging for teenagers to be sent to the Maze for study into research for a cure for the Flare.

The Scorch Trials Book Review

In brief, The Maze Runner is the story of a teenage boy, Thomas, and his band of friends who accomplish rather unbelievable feats to escape a devilishly designed maze. Oh yes, and all of them have no memories. That about sums it up.
In the second book, The Scorch Trials, Thomas and his friends are again put through a series of perilous experiments in a ravaged world. This time the boys realize that they are undergoing trials for the greater good of the human race, in the hope of finding a cure for a disturbing, fatal illness known as “the Flare.”

The Scorch Trials is a Post-apocalyptic Nightmare!

Wow, The Scorch Trials was definitely a bizarre mind trip, and after everything that was revealed and unfolded, I can’t wait to see how this series ends.

This next installment to The Maze Runner picks up right where the first book left off. The Gladers have been rescued from The Maze, but their trials are far from over. They are immediately launched into a human nightmare where WICKED uses mental, physical, psychological and emotional experiments to test mind patterns and reactions… for what purpose?? I have no clue yet, but they keep saying their findings will determine the fate of humanity. For pretty much the entire novel you have no idea why The Gladers are being put through these trials as they fight biotech armies, harsh weather conditions, and constant mental games. Thomas and his crew are injected with “The Flare” and promised a cure if they make it through the Trials. Along the way, they come across crazy, infected Cranks and several twists that leaves you wondering who the “wicked” ones really are.

James Dashner is a creative genius. I can’t tell you how amazed I am with his ability to come up with the most bizarre of elements that keep me, the reader, constantly wondering where he intends to take the story and what other crazy twists he can come up with. This story felt like a perfect blend between dystopic and scifi, which have recently become a favorite genre of mine.

There were some harsh lessons in this story and all I have to say is betrayal is a tough pill to swallow. It was hard to see some of the decisions and actions certain characters had to take, but it was well balanced with some interesting new additions to the cast. The entire time, I kept thinking how utterly scary it is that someone of power can easily manipulate and swipe someone’s memory, influence their thinking and determine their fate. This series really pushes the boundaries of possibilities and power. Two elements that when combined with ill intent can have the gravest of outcomes.

I’m looking forward to diving into the last book in the series The Death Cure to see how this all plays out. Well done!
