So the book follows Leah, the best friend Simon from Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda. It’s their senior year and prom is closing in. It’s pretty character driven, a little bit of a plot appearing around halfway through. She realises she has feelings for one of her female friends and she had to figure out how to handle that. She knows she’s bisexual, but she’s only out to her mom, not her friends, not even to Simon, who is gay. Leah’s cynical and socially awkward but also confident in herself. She’s unapologetically fat.

She’s a talented artist and a ripper on the drums. She’s also fierce when called for. When a white friend implies that their classmate Abby Suso only got accepted to her college because she is black, Leah, also white, calls out her bias directly (Abby is not present for this conversation), sparking a nuanced subplot on racism and white ally ship.

Mostly, though, senior year is characterized by Leah’s aching crush on Abby, the oh-so-beautiful and oh-so-straight girlfriend of Leah’s good friend Nick. When the prom-scene ending finally arrives, even the most Leah-worthy cynics will be rooting for her. With complex characters, authentic dialogue, and messy-but-beautiful friendships, this sequel is more than capable of standing on its own.

Leah on the Offbeat is a perfect sassy blend of real senior year feels, friend and family drama, and fandom references. The new YA novel tells the story of Leah Burke, who was first introduced in Becky Albertalli’s Simon vs. the Homosapiens Agenda (or the film Love, Simon).

It’s set three months after the events of Simon vs. the Homosapiens Agenda, and Leah, Abby, Simon, Bram, and Nick are all graduating and talking about college applications and dealing with being separated. The main character is Leah who, in her own words, is “your resident fat Slytherin Rory Gilmore.”

The character development of Leah is amazing as she begins as a girl who is angry at her friends and family, and ends as someone who is more accepting of herself, and those around her. Her journey to this ‘enlightened’ state, if you will, is splattered with obstacles such as dealing with her mother’s boyfriends and her friendship group imploding. Relatable, am I right?

The thing about Leah is, she is written as a real human. That sounds stupid, however, hear me out. She’s 100 percent a fangirl, with a passion and talent for drawing. Leah talks about her images of popular ships, such as Drarry (for those who live under rocks, that’s Draco and Harry from Harry Potter) and the more canon Percabeth (again, Percy and Annabeth of Percy Jackson and the Olympians). She is written in a way that is incredible and Albertalli makes you laugh from the very first page to the last. She feels like someone tangible, someone you would want to be friends with.

Albertalli also continues the story of Simon and Bram through Leah’s eyes. Albertalli does a fantastic job of continuing their story whilst still maintaining Leah’s own story. I mean, when we left them in Simon vs. The Homosapiens Agenda, we were left to gush about Simon and Bram to our friends and family, and other readers on social media platforms. But now we have a canonical continuation of their story! I mean yes please!

Overall I must say that Becky Albertalli definitely knows her way around teenagers and their feelings. She understands what is going on in our/their minds – I’m technically not a teenager anymore – which is why this book is so perfect in that way. And why it’s so popular.

Leah Burke – The young protagonist of the novel who is the drummer in the band Emoji. She has a deadpan, sarcastic sense of humor and is known to bottle up her feelings. She is very insecure and struggling to deal with her bisexuality.
Simon Spier – Leah’s best friend with whom she was secretly in love when they were younger. He is supportive, enjoys Oreos, musical theatre, Elliott Smith and Bram Greenfeld.
Nick Eisner – A talented singer, guitarist and soccer player and one of Leah’s best friends. Towards the end of Simon, Nick began a relationship with Abby, much to Leah’s annoyance.
Abigail Suso – Nick’s girlfriend and one of Simon’s closest friends. Leah is head over heels in love with Abby.
Bram Greenfeld – Simon’s boyfriend, a quiet, polite and cute soccer player.
Garrett Laughlin – Bram’s best friend and a member of the soccer team with Bram and Nick. Garrett has a crush on Leah and is a part of her larger circle of friends.
Morgan – One of Leah’s friends and the keyboardist in Emoji. She is Jewish and the events that occurred at her bat mitzvah are frequently mentioned by the other characters. In the novel, Morgan says something that causes Leah’s group to fracture.
Anna – One of Leah’s friends and the bassist in Emoji. She is Chinese-American, wears black eyeliner and reads manga.
Nora Spier – Simon’s younger sister and the guitarist in Emoji. Nora is not very assertive but described by Simon as “under the radar cool”.
Taylor Metternich – Leah’s self-obsessed, pretentious classmate and lead singer of Emoji.
Cal Price – One of Leah’s classmates and the stage manager of the school’s theatre production of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Martin Addison – One of Leah’s classmates who is universally disliked by the majority of the characters because he blackmailed and later outed Simon.
Jessica Keane – Leah’s mother. A lawyer to whom Leah is very close. Leah tells her everything, including the fact that she is bisexual.
Wells – Jessica’s new boyfriend. Leah dislikes him because he is older and says things like “oh fudge”.
Caitlin – Abby’s cousin’s girlfriend’s friend’s sister who lets Abby and Leah stay in her apartment.
