The Silver Chair Book Review

The Horse and His Boy is a good adventure story in the Chronicles. Here the adventure begins in Calormen, a coastal country south to Narnia. Two children, Shasta, a young boy who believes him to be kidnapped from Narnia and Aravis, a noble Calormene girl both make their escape from the Calormen – the boy to avoid being sold as a slave and the girl to avoid being forced to marry an old man. The story is mostly about their adventures as they make their escape and safe passage to Narnian territory. This adventure takes place while Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy rule Narnia as kings and queens, and they take a minor part in the story as well.

The story has action and is filled with suspense. It also conveys a message of the importance in being kind (both toward human and animals), helpful and humble. The story also dwells on both Middle Eastern and Western cultures through Calormen and Narnia respectively. The contrast on the people, their beahviour and conduct, and their beliefs and way of thinking add colour and made the read more interesting.

The book has been criticized as being racist, but I think Lewis was trying to be true to life as it was centuries ago in those countries. There was slavery in those countries too as it was in the western world, and there were child marriages in their cultures. I admit that it is a little difficult to stomach the antagonism that was created and worded between the two cultures, but history holds many such instances which eventually led to wars and one cannot blame Lewis for being influenced by history to create a story.

I really enjoyed the writing of this story. There was intrigue, suspense, and humor. The minute and colorful description of the various places where the adventurers found themselves painted a true picture of the setting that one feels one is living in the story with all those characters. Also, there was underlying satire which was quite a new experience.

This is one of those books that takes you to a land where you feel like you’ve come to this place many times before, it feels like home, you keep hugging this book, every time enchanted, and when you return to your world.

All you feel is MAGICAL.
