Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco Summary
A James Patterson Presents Novel
From the #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Stalking Jack the Ripper series comes a new blockbuster series…
Two sisters.
One brutal murder.
A quest for vengeance that will unleash Hell itself…
And an intoxicating romance.
Emilia and her twin sister Vittoria are streghe – witches who live secretly among humans, avoiding notice and persecution. One night, Vittoria misses dinner service at the family’s renowned Sicilian restaurant. Emilia soon finds the body of her beloved twin…desecrated beyond belief. Devastated, Emilia sets out to find her sister’s killer and to seek vengeance at any cost-even if it means using dark magic that’s been long forbidden.
Then Emilia meets Wrath, one of the Wicked-princes of Hell she has been warned against in tales since she was a child. Wrath claims to be on Emilia’s side, tasked by his master with solving the series of women’s murders on the island. But when it comes to the Wicked, nothing is as it seems…
Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco Book Review
This is a book filled with twists and turns, secrets, deaths, demons, and witches. If this doesn’t make you add this to your TBR list, I don’t know how to convince you otherwise.
Set in Sicily, Italy, we meet our protagonist, Emilia di Carlo, who is a witch that secretly lives among humans. She has a twin, Vittoria, who is also a witch. Emilia is the introverted one while Vittoria is the more adventurous one and isn’t too careful about keeping their identities hidden. One day, Emilia stumbles upon her sister’s bloody, dead body. Emilia swears that she will find the killer and get revenge.
Emilia starts by finding out the secrets that her sister has been keeping from her. One of the secrets that she finds out about is that her sister used a demon summoning spell. To really find out if this is true, Emilia tries it out for herself. She successfully summons a demon, expecting it to be a lower-level demon, but instead, she accidentally summons a demon prince, Wrath. There are seven demon princes, but the di Carlos should only fear Wrath, Greed, Envy, and Pride. When Wrath claims that he wants to help Emilia, should she ignore the stories that she has been told when she was younger or try to find this killer by herself?
When you start reading this book, don’t start on an empty stomach. The talk of food in this book makes me drool. The setting is amazing. I love the creepiness and the mysteriousness of it.
There were so many plot twists I couldn’t guess (well, except for the killer). I could not stop reading. I think this book took me a day to read. Honestly, I don’t think the plot was that good, but I loved the setting and the banter between the characters. I love the romance in this book. It’s enemies to lovers (my favourite trope of all time). I didn’t get as much romance as I wished for, but I’m sure there will be more in future books.
I didn’t really enjoy the writing though. I felt as if I was being told the story instead of experiencing it. There was a lot of running back and forth in this book that I found to be really annoying.
I’m worried about the sequel(s?). I really liked Stalking Jack the Ripper, but the sequels weren’t that great…with that being said I will definitely pick up the sequel because of that ending.
Something that I noticed while reading is that this kind of reminds me of House of Earth and Blood. Please don’t kill me for this and not read this book because you didn’t enjoy House of Earth and Blood or SJM. It isn’t the writing, romance, or characters of Kingdom of the Wicked that reminded me of House of Earth and Blood, it was the folklore about Hell and demons. I haven’t read much about this type of folklore so this was the only connection I could make. If you enjoyed House of Earth and Blood’s folklore (and Aidas), you need to read this.
