Chain of Iron PDF Book Summary

The Shadowhunters must catch a killer in Edwardian London in this dangerous and romantic sequel to the #1 New York Times bestselling novel Chain of Gold, from New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Cassandra Clare. Chain of Iron is a Shadowhunters novel.

Cordelia Carstairs seems to have everything she ever wanted. She’s engaged to marry James Herondale, the boy she has loved since childhood. She has a new life in London with her best friend Lucie Herondale and James’s charming companions, the Merry Thieves. She is about to be reunited with her beloved father. And she bears the sword Cortana, a legendary hero’s blade.

But the truth is far grimmer. James and Cordelia’s marriage is a lie, arranged to save Cordelia’s reputation. James is in love with the mysterious Grace Blackthorn whose brother, Jesse, died years ago in a terrible accident. Cortana burns Cordelia’s hand when she touches it, while her father has grown bitter and angry. And a serial murderer is targeting the Shadowhunters of London, killing under cover of darkness, then vanishing without a trace.

Together with the Merry Thieves, Cordelia, James, and Lucie must follow the trail of the knife-wielding killer through the city’s most dangerous streets. All the while, each is keeping a shocking secret: Lucie, that she plans to raise Jesse from the dead; Cordelia, that she has sworn a dangerous oath of loyalty to a mysterious power; and James, that he is being drawn further each night into the dark web of his grandfather, the arch-demon Belial. And that he himself may be the killer they seek.

Chain of Iron PDF Book Review

“Love is not always a lightning bolt. Sometimes it is a creeping vine. It grows slowly until suddenly it is all that there is in the world.”

Chain of Iron follows the same characters as the previous book but our friends are no longer the same. We start right from where we left off, when Cordelia and James “scandal” is revealed and James announces their marriage. Cordelia is ecstatic that she gets to marry the man she loves, but she knows that their arrangement will only last a year and James would go back to Grace. Lucie is on the hunt to find a way to bring Jesse back and tether him to the mortal world, and she will have to use unexpected allies to get what she wants. In the midst of this drama, a killer has awakened, someone is stalking the streets of London and murdering innocent shadowhunters in a way no one has ever seen. Together, The Merry Thieves, Lucie and Cordelia must find the killer before they do more harm and must stop them once and for all.

Well, this book broke my heart and though I was warned, it still hurt. This was so much more than i imagined, the characters were even more developed, the writing was beautiful, the drama was top-notch and the plot was much more visible than the one in Chain of Gold.

The writing was beautiful and like Cassandra Clare’s previous historical writing, I enjoyed it immensely. Personally, I believe she is much better at writing historical fantasy than she is at writing modern fantasy, but that is just my opinion. I love the third person perspective because we follow so many characters and we get bits from all the main characters. Primarily, we follow James, Cordelia and Lucie but we also get a lot of Grace, who I will talk about later in the review. Overall, I loved the writing and it was the best Cassandra Clare has done so far!

The plot was so much better than the one in Chain of Gold. In CoG, the plot was almost invisible and the drama was the main focus of the book, which I did not mind. However, in this book there were equal amounts of plot and drama, which I enjoyed much more. There was demon hunting, wrongful accusations by The Clave and lots and lots of killing and mystery, the perfect combination for any Cassandra Clare book, to clarify, I am not complaining. There were many unexpected plot twists and the conflict was really well written and realistic. The climax fell a little short but that end chapter had been at the edge of my seat. Overall, the plot was very well done and paced at the perfect speed.

Now, on to the best but most heartbreaking topic; The characters.

Where do I even start? The characters of this book are the best Cassandra Clare has created and my heart broke for them every single chapter. Each of the characters in this book have their own distinct personalities and I wholeheartedly love every single one of them, yes, even Grace. The characters made me laugh and jump up and down, and they also made me yell in frustration and cry so many tears. I love them so much.

Cordelia is amazing and one of the best female protagonists Cassandra Clare has ever written. She is fierce and strong-willed, but also sweet and caring towards the people she loves. Her constant faith in her dad and brother is very admirable, I love Cordelia and respect her very much.

Lucie is one of my favourite characters in this book, I just love her spirit so much. She is sassy but kind, confident but loving and her relationship with Jesse is so cute. I love that she writes and that she isn’t afraid to speak her opinion and tell people when she thinks something is wrong. I can’t wait for more Lucie!

James and I have a love and hate relationship. Yes, I think he’s amazing and kind and very caring but I was also so frustrated with him at times in the book, which obviously was Cassandra Clare’s point. I really do love him but, you know when you get to that point in a book when a character does something so stupid, you just have to close the book, take a deep breath and start again? That is what I had to do, multiple times during James’ perspective. But, he is still amazing and I still want to read more about him in the next book.

And now, it is time for our cinnamon roll, drum roll please….(say it with me everyone) MATTHEWWW! I love Matthew so much and I cannot even begin to describe how amazing and sweet he is. He is one of those characters that quickly and quietly sneaks into your heart and stays. He is by far, my favorite character Cassandra Clare has ever created. He is so loyal to his friends and despite so many issues, he loves his family. Even though he has so many friends and is never physically alone, he is still so very lonely, and my heart breaks for Matthew. I am praying that in the next book, Cassandra Clare gives our cinnamon roll someone to help him live and love because he deserves it.

“Have you wished me gone?” he (James) said teasingly.

“No. Only I wish myself gone, sometimes” (Matthew)

AHHHHHHH MY HEART.

The last character I will talk about is Grace. I know, everyone is probably rolling their eyes and thinking why is there even a mention of Grace in this review? But, I will say it, I like Grace. After reading Chain of Gold, I hated her with all my heart but now I like her but more importantly, I understand her. I’m not going to explain anything else because I don’t want to spoil anything but just know that your opinion on her may change.

Overall, I loved this book with all my heart. The writing was beautiful, the plot was intriguing and the characters were absolutely amazing and even more lovable than before. That ending killed me and I have no idea how I will survive for a whole year but I guess we’ll see what happens I guess that’s all for today. Did I like the book? Yes, will I read the next one? of course!
